Airbus A321-200 accident report

28 July 2010 AP-BJB Airblue c/n 1218 first flight 14-04-2000 total airframe hrs : 34018 cycles : 13566 engines : V2533-A5 fatalities : 152. Crashed 15 km NNW of Islamabad airport (ISB) flight ED202 from Karachi (KHI) to Islamabad (ISB) with 146 passengers and 6 crew. Crashed in the Margalla Hills near Islamabad apt. during the approach in bad weather. There were no survivors. Flight crew error due to dominant captain resulting into CFIT (controlled flight into terrain). Location (taken from the accident report): +- 25 [m] 33°44’39.6”N, 73°02’36.5”E

31 October 2015 Metrojet (Kogalymavia) Airbus A321-231 EI-ETJ c/n 663 operating flight 7K9268 from Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt (SSH) to Saint Petersburg, Russia (LED) with 217 passengers and 7 crew. In mid air, flying at 9414m altitude there was an explosion after which the aircraft broke in pieces and crashed 50km SE of Hasna, North Sinai peninsula. All 224 on board died in the crash. Debris of the aircraft was scattered over a wide area of more then 13 km length. First flight : 09 May 1997, total airframe hrs : 56000 cycles : 21000. Engines : V2533-A5 Cause : terrorist attack, IED (improvised explosive device) with the power of 1.5 [kg] TNT detonated. Flew before as F-OHMP with MEA and later as TC-OAE with Onur Air. Location : main impact area +-100 [m] 30°10’09.41”N 34°10’22.28”E

2 fatal accidents between 1997 (into service) and 2022 > 25 service years, 1700 A321-200 aircraft built , safety number = (2 accidents / 25 service years / 1700 aircraft)*1000 = 0.047 (1 on 850 aircraft had a fatal accident in 25 years of service)

Total 376 people sadly died in the accidents.

Considering that 1 aircraft was lost due a terrorist attack, the A321-200 is a very safe aircraft to fly.
